Facts
- Rickmansworth Gateway Club started in September 1977.
- Rickmansworth Gateway Club was originally called St. John's Junior Gateway Club, when it met in the St. John's Church hall and School in Mill End. It was organised by parents and carers to provide playschemes and leisure activities for their children with learning disabilities. Our name changed to 'Rickmansworth Gateway Club' when Rickmansworth Mencap took over running the playschemes.
- The club started with approximately 30 members and we now have got over 85 members.
- The first Gateway Club Leader was Peter Loose.
- There have been 27 different club leaders (so far, including job shares!).
- The longest-serving leader was Paul Topping (5 years).
- We celebrated our Silver Jubilee in 2002, with a big sports day, drama show and reunion ball for our Club's members old and new.
- There have been 4 drama performances and one concert produced by Ricky Gateway Club.
- There have been 6 Gateway weddings that we know of (with some more to follow we hope!).
- There have been two different logos for our Club.
- Rickmansworth Gateway has organised 2 inter-club sports days and fun days for members of other Gateway Clubs in the region.
- We have been to the following places on holidays and weekend camps: North Wales, Dorking, Ironbridge Gorge, Eastbourne, Hayling Island, Mersey Island, South Wales, Cadburys World (!), France (twice) and Portsmouth (loads of times!).
- We have held 4 sponsored bike rides (including Brighton once and Oxford twice). Also two long sponsored walks for the WorldWide Fund for Nature!
