Introduction
Rickmansworth Gateway Club is one of many Gateway Clubs across the country that are affiliated to MENCAP. Gateway Clubs are for local people where those with a learning disability meet and are joined by non-disabled people.
Rickmansworth Gateway Club was set up in 1977 and is now firmly based at the Shepherd Centre in Mill End, Hertfordshire. It aims to provide a safe, understanding and enjoyable atmosphere at weekly Club evenings and on outside events and holidays.
Everyone who comes to Rickmansworth Gateway becomes a member of the Club. Many come from residential homes and some members even rope their brothers and sisters into Club events! Anyone who is over 14 and wants to help at Club is welcome to come along: regular attendance at Rickmansworth Gateway Club is suitable for completing the "service" section of Duke of Edinburgh's awards, whilst enjoying yourself at the same time.
Many of our members have grown up with Rickmansworth Gateway Club, but new faces are always welcomed. The Club is run by a committee and a large number of unpaid support members, who organise the Wednesday Club evenings and provide a range of weekend breaks, day trips and holidays. With some funding from Three Rivers District Council and donations, the Club is able to run many activities, outings and holidays, for which there is always demand.

Rickmansworth Gateway Club exists to provide leisure and recreation for people with a learning disability living in the local community and works to help people with a learning disability to be accepted as part of that community. It believes in the following statements:
- People with a learning disability have the same HUMAN VALUE as anyone else and so have the same HUMAN RIGHTS.
- People with a learning disability have a right to LIVE LIKE OTHERS in the community.
- People with a learning disability are all INDIVIDUALS with DIFFERENT SKILLS, INTERESTS, NEEDS AND DESIRES.
The objective of Rickmansworth Gateway Club is to work towards realising these statements, but at the same time "to have as much fun as possible".
